The Grand National Meeting 2025
Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th April

The 2025 Grand National, the 177th iteration of this iconic steeplechase, is scheduled for Saturday 5th April, at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool. The race will commence at 4:00 PM, featuring a maximum of 34 runners, a continued reduction from the traditional 40 to enhance safety measures.

Leading Contenders:

  • I Am Maximus: The defending Grand National champion, trained by Willie Mullins, aims to replicate last year’s success. Despite an 8lb higher mark this year, his proven aptitude over Aintree’s challenging fences makes him a formidable contender.
  • Intense Raffles: After a commendable second-place finish in the Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase, this Irish Grand National winner is among the leading prospects. His recent form suggests readiness for Aintree’s demanding course.
  • Stumptown: Known for his agility and recent victory at Cheltenham, Stumptown is garnering attention as a strong candidate for the Grand National.

Race Details:

The Grand National spans over four miles and two furlongs, challenging horses with 30 fences over two laps. The total prize fund stands at £1 million, with £500,000 awarded to the winner. The event will be broadcast live on ITV.

In recent years, Aintree has implemented several safety enhancements, including reducing the maximum field size to 34 runners and modifying certain fences. These changes aim to improve horse welfare and reduce the number of fallers and unseated riders.

As the Grand National approaches, the racing community eagerly anticipates another thrilling chapter in this historic event, renowned for its unpredictability and the unique challenges it presents to both horse and rider.
